The Story Behind the Stone

about us intro

On September 29, 1991, 150 Charter Members played the first tee shots at Greystone. Three decades of investment in the courses, the facilities, and the membership have produced Alabama's only 36-hole equity club and the permanent home of The Tradition. The standard hasn't changed since day one.

Thirty-Five Years in the Making

Greystone began as a vision for what a golf community in the Appalachian foothills of Alabama could be.

Daniel Corporation developed the land in 1989 and the Founders Course, designed by Bob Cupp and Alabama native Hubert Green, opened two years later with 150 Charter Members.

Professional golf arrived almost immediately. George Archer won the inaugural Bruno's Memorial Classic in 1992 on a course Sports Illustrated would name the best stop on the Champions Tour.

The club's growth mirrored its ambition. By 1998, membership was approaching 600 and the Legacy Course, designed by Rees Jones, was approved. It opened September 29, 2000, making Greystone Alabama's first and only 36-hole equity club.

In 2009, the membership purchased the club from Daniel Corporation, establishing Greystone as a member-owned club.

The decades that followed brought continued investment in the club and its members, including the addition of the Golf Performance Center, Fitness Center, Aquatics Center, Ninety-One, and the permanent return of The Tradition in 2016.

Today, Greystone is home to some of golf's most recognizable names. Member Michael Jordan has remained part of the club since his time with the Birmingham Barons in 1994, while Mark Blackburn—ranked No. 1 on Golf Digest's "50 Best Teachers in America" - has chosen Greystone as home to his Blackburn Golf Academy. The Legacy Course ranks among Golfweek's Top 100 Residential Courses, and Travel + Leisure Golf has recognized Greystone as one of America's Top 100 Golf Communities.

More than three decades after its founding, Greystone continues to evolve—building its legacy while creating the next chapter in its story.

Your Visit to Greystone

At Greystone, guests are welcomed with the same warmth and hospitality our members enjoy every day. Our staff is committed to ensuring each visit is seamless, gracious, and memorable.

As a private, member-owned club, all guests must be accompanied by a current member throughout their visit.

To help ensure a seamless experience from the moment you arrive, we encourage guests to review Greystone's dress guidelines before visiting.

On the course, appropriate golf attire includes collared or mock-neck shirts, Bermuda-length shorts or slacks, and soft-spike golf shoes. Cargo-style shorts are not permitted, and shirts should remain tucked in.

Throughout the clubhouses, smart casual attire reflects the welcoming yet refined atmosphere that defines Greystone year-round.

In Their Own Words

"Love to play Greystone. Both courses are always immaculate with much attention to detail. Staff is always polite and helpful."
